Bacterial plaque is a sticky and colourless film that forms on the teeth and as time passes it hardens into a rough, porous substance known as tartar. Before any dental treatment to ensure good oral hygiene and a favorable outcome of the treatment ultrasonic plaque removal is performed . This treatment is also able to remove tartar from”invisible” areas under the gums, then hard to reach parts are cleaned with hand-held instruments.
Finally, a thorough polishing of the teeth will make them shiny and smooth.
The removal of plaque is very important in order to prevent gingivitis, since if the inflammation persists, this can cause bone destruction.
When was the last time you had a tartar removal?
Our leading dentist’s advice is that every six months (or quarterly if necessary) to visit us for plaque removal to prevent gingivitis!
Curettage ,gingival incision, regenerative surgery
Preparatory treatment ,ultrasoninc plaque removal is used above and under gums.
Then follows curettage meaning the cleaning below gums and removing the inflamed tissues and infected root cement layer. Practically we destroy bulk of the bacteria. Curettage is performed under local anesthesia, therefore it is a painless procedure.
Specially formed ,sterile manual Gracey instruments are used ,capable with their sharp ends to mechanically cleanse the surface of the tooth root. Part of them courved, allowing to gently remove out of gum pockets the patient’s soft tissues that maintain tissue reaction with the release of inflammatory factors. This procedure is essential for cleaning in short time (two days)all gum pouches, preventing reinflamation of the already cleaned gum pouches.
After treatment, antiseptic medicines are introduced in gum pouches .This is for blocking the settlement of bacteria again. After the intervention, pain is not typical, but can be possible. In such cases, taking of painkillers is recommended.
After 3-4 weeks following curette, control examination is done, evaluating the degree of recovery, the efficiency of the individual oral hygiene. If necessary, casual treatments such as filling protruding edge correction, rough polishing pads, replacement of defective restorations, can be done at this stage.
Curettes can be open as well. This is a surgical procedure under local anesthesia used in difficult cases . Along the inner/outer side of the teeth a little incision is done on gum line in order to explore the defects and beneath the gums lying area.
Closed and opened cleaning methods below the gum generally eliminate the inflammation.
Unfortunately this disease is much more likely to come up again, therefore, our patients are called back every , 3-6 months for control , to follow the healing process. Some more severe forms of periodontal disease require for regenerative surgery using specially developed membranes for this purpose. These membranes are removed 4-6 weeks after surgery, following other controlled periods for almost 9-12 months.
What results can be expected from the regenerative surgery?
- deep bone pockets are considerably or completely filled up,bacteria making location is removed, the infection-free status will be sustainable for long term
- clean surfaces are created in which are the pillars of good oral hygiene
- the tooth will be hold by several bones, making it solid, it becomes suitable for making tooth replacements
- if it was carried out for implantation, it will be done after complete healing time,if gums withdrawal treatment was the goal, then the bone regenerative surgery provides the basis for the gums, to withdraw from the tooth.
