Removable denture

The crown-retained partial denture is a high-quality dental prosthesis used as an alternative to telescopic dentures or implants. With its combination of fixed crowns and a removable, click-in denture component, it offers a secure fit with good to very good aesthetics.

Even today, partial dentures with attachments remain a viable alternative to implant treatment, with advantages and disadvantages that should be considered before deciding on one solution or the other.

Staple-free and aesthetically pleasing

A slide anchorage system makes it possible to attach removable dentures to supporting teeth without clasps. This requires the corresponding teeth to be crowned, with a groove cut into the side or back (matrix) into which the matching counterpart (patrix) of the prosthesis to be anchored can be clicked/inserted. Since the crowns can be designed to be aesthetically pleasing, this type of restoration was previously used very often for missing molars. The front teeth must be fitted with dental crowns, and the removable molar denture is then inserted into the matching matrix and held securely in place. The attachment crowns are firmly bonded to the tooth stumps (fixed part). Depending on the number of crowns, the load is distributed between the crowned teeth and the jaw ridge/gums (integument). Advantages of attachment work

  • Aesthetically good to very good in most cases
  • Secure anchoring of the dentures
  • Good wearing comfort for removable dentures

Disadvantages of attachment work

  • Crowns must be placed on the teeth (with all the disadvantages that entails)
  • More difficult to care for (susceptibility to caries) with fixed (interconnected) crowns
  • Attachment function wears out
  • Repair/expandability not possible in case of tooth loss!
  • Technically complex, expensive (possibly high metal costs for gold frameworks)
