Removable dentures, traditional

Globe Dental private dental practice in Balatonkenese, Budapest.

What are traditional removable dentures?

Traditional removable dentures are the most commonly chosen treatment for partial and complete tooth loss in older people.

Removable dentures should be made when the number of remaining teeth is insufficient for the patient to wear fixed dentures.

The purpose of the prosthesis is to restore chewing function and aesthetic appearance. Proper chewing is a basic requirement for healthy digestion, without which digestive problems can arise, leading to further illness.

In terms of the extent of tooth loss, we can talk about partial (in which case the patient still has their own teeth that are suitable for fixation) or complete (when there are no teeth left to fix the prosthesis to). In the former case, a so-called partial removable denture may be the solution, while in the latter case, a complete removable denture may be the solution. We would like to emphasize that at Globe Dental, we do not make clasp dentures, because in addition to being unaesthetic, the clasps displace the patient’s own teeth over the years, causing further tooth loss.

The prosthesis consists of three parts: an artificial gum, a base plate, and artificial teeth. Non-fixed dentures are not very comfortable and can easily move during eating or speaking because their stability is ensured only by the vacuum effect, gravity, and a precisely fitting base plate.

What is a combined removable denture?

This type of replacement is most commonly used when only the front teeth remain and the patient has lost all of their molars.

Combined tooth replacement means that a fixed replacement (metal-ceramic bridge) is supplemented with a removable metal plate denture. This is a precision removable denture, for which we use internal hidden fasteners that do not damage the patient’s own teeth like clasps do. This type of denture is very stable in the mouth because it is supported by the patient’s own teeth, i.e., it does not just stick to the gums like a full denture.

The use of a precision element (e.g., a push button or slider) secures it stably in the mouth. At least two teeth must be crowned for a precision element because they can withstand the force that the denture transfers to the teeth during chewing. Therefore, a combined procedure requires at least four crowns, which means two two-unit bridges.

The teeth in the denture are made of plastic. The base of the artificial part is a very thin metal plate, so this type of replacement always has a thin metal palatal arch at the top or a small metal connector at the bottom. The lower part is usually not bothersome, and we thin the upper bridge as much as possible, but the fact is that it is there and partially covers the palate.

If you do not want a palatal part, ask about implant solutions!
